One poet once said: “She walked with the Universe on her shoulders and made it look like a pair of wings…”  These are the words that come into my mind when I think about Zina Hassel,  CEO of ZLH Enterprises, a woman-owned telecommunications company. I am privileged to be one of Zina’s mentees. Zina is a woman of steel strength and nurturing heart, a combination that only a female leader can possess. She made herself, but what is more important, she is proactively using her success as a platform to inspire  young women to not be defeated by their own fears and socially conditioned insecurities. We need this type of leadership more than ever today! In her recent book “My armadillo skin: how I made it as a woman in telecom” Zina bravely opened up about her early experience at one position in telecom: “…it was apparently well known to all (except me) that I was having an affair with the chief executive officer (CEO). How else and why else would I be in such a high-level position? Really, people, maybe I was in the position because I had the intellect!!” Not only women are sometimes underestimated, diminished and bullied in highly technical and male-dominated  workplaces, their femininity and beauty are often used against them. Why can’t we finally understand that only in synergy and appreciation of  each other’s strengths and unique perspectives something extraordinary gets created!
